BELGRADE - One third of SMEs in central and eastern Europe have enabled payment by card to meet customer requests while 18 pct of the enterprises see the payment method as an opportunity to keep up with modern trends in technology, a survey shows.

Despite the fact that information and communication technologies are relevant and expected to have an increasing impact on society, SMEs are mostly still doing business in the traditional domains, according to the survey, conducted by Mastercard in the CEE region - Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Serbia and Ukraine.

A quarter of the SMEs are from the retail sector, followed by the services sector (16.5 pct) and the manufacturing sector (11.8 pct).

The situation in Serbia is similar to that in the wider region - 29.5 pct of local SMEs are operating in the retail sector, 22 pct in the manufacturing sector and 20.5 pct in the services sector.
