BELGRADE - Serbian new car sales rose 10 pct last year compared to 2018, Vecernje novosti has reported.

The good 2018 result of 30,731 new vehicles sold was surpassed as early as November 2019, when the total reached 31,601.

According to the report, December 2019 sales are expected to be on the same level as those in December 2018, when 2,638 units were sold, meaning that the increase in sales will be over 10 pct.

Most of the vehicles - 4,258 units - were sold in April in the wake of a well-organised Belgrade Motor Show, when buyers took advantage of major discounts.

Skoda led the pack with a total 5,437 passenger and light commercial vehicles sold and Fiat and Renault followed with 5,133 and 2,020 units, respectively.

"A large number of new cars that became available on our market almost at the same time as they did on the largest European markets, as well as favourable terms of purchase, numerous discounts and other benefits introduced by our importers have produced results," Boban Nikolic, secretary-general of the Serbian Association of New Car and Automotive Parts Importers, told the paper.
