NIS - Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Tuesday Air Serbia would provide special subsidies to the Constantine the Great Airport in Nis for low cost flights and that Serbia aimed to develop cargo transport at the airport.

During a tour of the airport's new terminal building, Vucic said it was difficult to develop cargo transport without a developed industry.

"We can now consider doing that. We now have 12 or 13 factories, and once we have 20, cargo transport will make sense. That will happen in two or three years, and then Nis will serve as a separate logistics hub," Vucic said.

"That is a great opportunity for the city's development," he said.

The new terminal building at the Nis airport, designed to handle 1.5 mln passengers a year, is an investment worth 16 mln euros.

Vucic said the number of passengers at the airport had risen from 27,000 in 2012 to a record-high 448,000 in 2023 and that the figure was expected to reach half a million next year.

Due to a lack of low-cost airlines, the number of passengers is expected to be between 300,000 and 350,000 this year, he noted.
