BELGRADE - Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic met with the director of the Hyundai Engineering office in Belgrade Li Sung on Friday to discuss construction of self-balancing solar power plants with a capacity of 1 GW and battery systems for energy storage.
The minister said building such plants across Serbia was one of the "largest renewable energy projects in Europe and one of the most significant projects in the Serbian energy sector."
"It will ensure more green energy in our system, which is extremely important for businesses and citizens, as well as for boosting the security of supplies," Djedovic Handanovic said.
She said the project would provide the national power company EPS with the largest power generation capacity when it comes to renewable sources, further strengthening its position as a key producer of green energy.
She said work on planning and technical documentation was underway and that it was expected to be completed within a set time frame, the Ministry of Mining and Energy said in a statement.
"We expect the first construction works to begin by the end of this year or early next year," she added.
The minister noted that an agreement to build the solar power plants had been signed in mid-October 2024 and that talks about financial terms of the deal were underway.
The Hyundai Engineering representative noted the South Korean company's commitment to the strategic project, which he said would help the development of renewable energy sources in Serbia and the strengthening of its energy stability.
