NOVI SAD - The first IBM development centre in Serbia opened in Novi Sad on Tuesday.

PM Ana Brnabic said this was a great day for Serbia as the largest global IT company that was also the precursor of the entire IT industry was opening a development centre in the country.

The centre will be developing technologies for IBM's needs, and Brnabic also opened the US company's first Novi Sad office.

"When the IBM comes it is a big signal, indicating that we are a major destination on the global business map. To date, they have only been selling their solutions in Belgrade and Serbia has never been a place where technology is being developed for their needs," she said.

She recalled that the US ambassador to Serbia and President Aleksandar Vucic had opened a Belgrade office of US e-vehicle maker Rivian two weeks ago and that IBM was now opening a centre in Novi Sad.

"That is of enormous significance for our economic growth and it is wind in our sails and an encouragement to believe in our talent. There are already announcements that this office will continue to grow. I am thankful to IBM for believing in us and I am confident we will not disappoint them," Brnabic noted.

IBM regional director Nikola Polic said the Novi Sad office would engage in software development.

"This is a major thing for the local IBM because we are finally opening another office in Serbia and it will deal with very concrete technology development. That is important for Serbia because it demonstrates that it is a great place for major tech companies to come to. Thanks to this development centre, we will be able to offer better services and support to customers in the wider region," Polic noted.
