NEW YORK - Serbian FM Marko Djuric said on Monday evening Bosnia and Herzegovina FM Elmedin Konakovic had attempted to misuse a Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) ministerial meeting in New York to accuse Serbia and the Serbs of aggression.

Djuric said he had tried to outline an agenda of the future of Serbia and the region and speak about dynamic economic development, transport connectivity, new generations in the region and about building a common better future, omitting all ugly things from the past.

He added that, on the other hand, Konakovic's move was "very ugly and undiplomatic."

"He tried to hijack the NAM meeting and - in spite of the global problems now faced by humanity and despite all the challenges and a need to work together in the region - to misuse it to accuse Serbia and the Serbs of aggression and brand them as criminals and aggressors," Djuric said.

He said that, regrettably, Konakovic had definitely shown that he was undermining the internal political cohesion within Bosnia and Herzegovina and that he was not working in the spirit of the Dayton Agreement and good regional cooperation.

Addressing the meeting, Djuric called on NAM member states to remain loyal to the original principles of the organisation.

He thanked them for respecting international law in the past decades.

Noting that the first NAM summit had been held in Belgrade, Djuric noted that Serbia continued to respect and cherish the organisation's founding principles as they remained relevant to this day, the Serbian MFA said in a statement.

He stressed that Serbia had faced gross violations of the UN Charter in 1999, when it was attacked without consent by the UN Security Council, and in 2008, when the provisional self-government authorities in Pristina unilaterally declared Serbia's autonomous province of Kosovo-Metohija as independent.

He noted that the unilateral decision had been made without Serbia's consent, without approval by UNMIK and without any referendum whatsoever.
