ROME - Serbian Deputy Parliament Speaker Marina Ragus, who also heads the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, met with the chairwoman of the foreign affairs and defence committee of the Italian Senate Stefania Craxi in Rome on Wednesday to discuss further advancement of parliamentary cooperation.

"We believe international cooperation is making a significant contribution to development of bilateral relations, to bringing peoples closer together, as well as to preservation of historical and cultural ties uniting two countries. In the same manner, believing in the importance of parliamentary democracy as an instrument of development of relations and in the necessity of deepened dialogue on numerous foreign policy and defence topics, today we established a new, deeper form of cooperation, lending an additional impetus to bilateral relations," Ragus said.

Pursuant to a verbal agreement reached during Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic's visit to Rome at the end of last year, the Serbian parliamentary committee on foreign affairs and the foreign affairs and defence committee of the Italian Senate also signed an agreement on cooperation.

Craxi said that, to mutual satisfaction, the agreement formalised the existing cooperation between the Serbian parliament and the Italian Senate.

It is the first-ever agreement signed by the Serbian parliamentary committee with an equivalent in any other country.
