Sapic unsure whether opposition would run in repeat local elections in Belgrade
BELGRADE - The head of the City of Belgrade Interim Authority Aleksandar Sapic said on Wednesday repeat local elections in the Serbian capital were quite certain as there was no majority in the city assembly, but noted that he was unsure whether the opposition would run in them.
"They would declare the new (electoral) results illegitimate because they did not run, which is what they did in 2020, when they boycotted the elections and declared them illegitimate. They said at the time that forming a majority in the assembly would be destruction of the constitutional and legal order and that any (resulting) government would be illegal, but such a government was the one that called new elections in which they ran," Sapic told Pink TV.
He urged opposition representatives to be reasonable because "the question of who will form a majority in the assembly or become mayor is completely irrelevant if the violence escalates."
