NOVI SAD - Serbia will continue to invest in artificial intelligence (AI) while taking ethical principles into account, Serbian PM Milos Vucevic said at the opening of the Eastern European Machine Learning School (EEML) at the Novi Sad Science and Technology Park on Monday.

Vucevic said AI must not be misused and should be defined by law without obstruction to progress.

"We need to free people of fear and show that what is being done here is to the benefit of the people," Vucevic said, adding that development and growth of AI was also connected to power generation.

"We understand what you are doing, you are demonstrating that science knows no borders. I want to tell you that you must also focus on science, on bringing everything closer to us mere mortals, and not only when it comes to science - I am also talking about overall education. Also, do not neglect the issue of ethical use of artificial intelligence," Vucevic noted.

Acting director of the Serbian Institute for AI Dubravko Culibrk said everyone was proud the EEML was being held in Novi Sad.

"My fundamental motive for this was to create an environment where our young people can deal with AI and integrate in a community," he said.

Prominent lecturers from the New York University, ETH Zürich, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, McGill University and other universities are confirmed to attend the event, as are representatives of global tech companies such as Google DeepMind, Genentech (Roche), Bitdefender, Microsoft, INSAIT and PolyAI and experts from the University of Belgrade and the Serbian Institute for AI.

The July 15-20 EEML Summer School for more than 250 attendees from 24 countries consists of six days of intensive training including lectures, practical sessions and introductory lectures by representatives of the business sector and presentations of sponsor booths.
