BELGRADE - Social Democratic Party of Serbia leader Rasim Ljajic said on Monday lithium had become an "absolutely dominant" political topic.
"Given the significance of that issue from the economic and environmental points of view, that topic should be a political issue to the least extent and everyone else but experts who know absolutely everything about lithium should be talking about it to the least extent," Ljajic told Pink TV.
"Can anyone assume that someone could get into the lithium agenda with the aim of poisoning people and doing something that is against all possible principles, especially moral ones?" Ljajic asked.
"I have no idea about lithium, like 99 per cent of the people, but we are all debating this and we think that, if we have read something on the internet, we know everything about it," he said, noting that "half-knowledge is far worse than a complete lack of knowledge."
Politicians should not be talking about this issue either, except that they will make a final decision, he said.
"Experts must say what the economic benefits are and also point out potential environmental and other dangers. If the latter is greater than the former, the deal is off," Ljajic said.
