BELGRADE - The FMs of Serbia and Gambia, Ivica Dacic and Mamadou Tangara, said in Belgrade on Friday revitalising the historical and friendly ties between their countries and strengthening mutual support at multilateral level was very important.

At a joint press conference after a meeting with Tangara, Dacic said the meeting would kickstart development and strengthening of further bilateral ties, which date back from the era of the Non-Aligned Movement.

"We want to cherish relations with countries with which we are connected by a commitment to the common principles and values dating back from the era of Non-Aligned countries," Dacic said, noting that efforts must be made to define the points for revitalising the relations.

"We need to sign new bilateral agreements and see what segments are successful and useful, we need to establish joint principles and support, at multilateral level in particular, and discuss regional affairs, be they ours or African ones," he said.

Dacic said the loss of ties that had existed in the past had led to a lack of understanding when it comes to Serbia's paramount national issue - territorial integrity and sovereignty.

"To that end, it is very important for us to also revitalise that principle of respect for national issues," Dacic said, noting that the opening of a Serbian honorary consulate in Gambia in 2022 was a starting point for development of relations.

The minister also said Gambia had been a UN Security Council member at the time of the adoption of UNSC Resolution 1244 on Kosovo-Metohija, which he noted Serbia was adhering to.
