BELGRADE - Congratulating all Serbs on St Vitus's Day, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that, on a "day we remember the past," he wanted to point out how much Serbia had changed and how a losing spirit had become a winning one, with the same desire, ambition and objective to transform Serbia even more strongly and more convincingly in the future.

"Today is St Vitus's Day, the most important day for us Serbs. Happy holiday, happy St Vitus's Day to you. The future is in your hands and I am certain we can and must do many, many more good things four our Serbia," Vucic said in a brief video posted on his buducnostsrbijeav Instagram profile.

On St Vitus's Day, we usually discuss the past and what has marked our lives and the lives of previous generations, Vucic said, adding that he had come to the balcony of the Presidency of Serbia building to demonstrate in a symbolic way how important the future "of not only the land of our ancestors, but the land of our children" was.

He explained that his "not quite successful" paraphrase of a sentence by Serbian writer Borislav Pekic was aimed at pointing out one detail:

"Every time I am going through a difficult time, I come to the balcony of the Presidency and I look at what we and some people before us have done, how many facades we have renovated and how we have built an entire new city, Belgrade Waterfront, not far from here, how we have changed Serbia, how we have transformed a losing spirit into a winning one, with the same desire, ambition and objective to transform Serbia even more strongly and more convincingly in the future."
