Vojvodina suffer 1-0 away defeat to Ajax in UEFA Europa League qualifier

AMSTERDAM - Serbian football club Vojvodina Novi Sad suffered a 1-0 away defeat to Dutch giants Ajax in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League second qualifying round tie at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam on Thursday evening.
In the first half, Ajax missed a handful of opportunities to score as Vojvodina goalkeeper Lazar Carevic produced several excellent saves.
The first big chance in the second half fell to Vojvodina in the 72nd minute, when substitute Aleksa Vukanovic went one-on-one with the goalkeeper but his shot hit the goalpost.
In the 86th minute, Ajax substitute Branco van den Boomen headed a Mika Godts cross home from eight yards out to win the game for Ajax.
The second leg will be played in Backa Topola on August 1.
In the UEFA Conference League second qualifying round, Serbia's Radnicki Kragujevac beat Montenegrin side Mornar Bar 1-0 in Leskovac.
In his club's European debut, Milan Aleksic headed the winner home in the 71st minute.
The second leg is scheduled for July 31 in Podgorica.
