PARIS - Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics after a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) victory over Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the men's singles final on Sunday afternoon.
Djokovic, who won the match after two hours and 52 minutes of play, is now 4-3 head-to-head against Alcaraz.
He claimed his first career Olympic gold and the second for Serbia at the Paris games.
The victory over Alcaraz in the Paris final makes Djokovic, who won the tournament without losing a sat, the oldest Olympic champion in a tennis singles event.
The 37-year-old Serbian, who has competed at as many as five Olympic Games, also won the bronze in Beijing in 2008.
"I do not know what to say... I am completely shocked by the emotions and everything. The goal of securing a medal for Serbia, getting into the final, has been accomplished. It is something I failed to do at my first four Olympics. Everyone wanted me to go for gold and I wanted that, too, and I went for that today. I think qualifying for the final helped me be a bit more relieved going into the match," Djokovic told the RTS after the final.
