BELGRADE - Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic awarded the Order of Merit for Defence and Security, 1st Class to a gendarme wounded in a recent terrorist attack outside the Israeli embassy in Belgrade.
Vucic said gendarme Milos Jevremovic epitomised all the virtues expected from people protecting the country.
"He performs his duty in an honourable and professional manner. Our country, the Republic of Serbia, and Milos Jevremovic's family, must be proud," Vucic said at a ceremony at the Presidency of Serbia.
He added that Jevremovic was a hero and a victim at the same time in a tragedy named terrorism, which he noted had not spared Belgrade as it was of global character.
"People who commit the gravest acts against safety and security see themselves as big stars. The man who committed this act is similar to all those in the EU and the US who think they are making a mark that is bigger, more significant than that of a common criminal," Vucic said.
That is why it is necessary to have people in this country who are capable of protecting the citizens of Serbia, he said.
"For us, it is very important to stop the promotion of violence, from what we see in the streets to what we see on social media networks, and that is not an easy task. Faced with the threat of an all-out war in today's world, terrorism, we will have to keep strengthening our security forces," Vucic said.
