BELGRADE - Serbian Minister of Information and Telecommunications Dejan Ristic and Iranian Minister of Information and Communications Technology Sayyid Sattar Hashemi signed on Thursday a memorandum on cooperation between their ministries in the ICT sector.

Speaking to reporters after a signing ceremony at the Palace of Serbia, Ristic said Serbia had been invited to make an appearance at Iran's top IT event from June 18 through 21.

He said Serbia would try to make the best possible debut at the event.

Ristic said an agreement had been reached to establish cooperation in the field of data transfer and to maximise efforts to boost e-commerce.

He said Hashemi had visited the state data centre in Kragujevac on Wednesday and was scheduled to tour a science and technology park in Novi Sad on Thursday.

He noted that the two countries had been developing their relations for decades and that an opportunity to boost cooperation in the IT sector represented a special segment.

Ristic said the meeting with Hashemi had especially focused on establishing and boosting cooperation in scientific and research activities and on development of a 5G network.

He said they had agreed to make economic cooperation even better.

"We agreed to set up several joint teams as early as after next week to define mechanisms for stepping up cooperation in the IT sector, postal traffic and e-commerce," Ristic said.

Hashemi said the signing of the memorandum was another step forward in development of cooperation.

"This document creates a platform and frameworks for joint investment, development and research," he said.
