Vucic continues New York meetings on Srebrenica resolution

NEW YORK - Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic met with representatives of African UN member states at the UN's New York headquarters on Tuesday to explain Serbia's position on an announced Srebrenica genocide resolution, due to be tabled to the UN General Assembly in early May.

In an Instagram post, Vucic wrote he had told the representatives that Serbia had been condemning the Srebrenica crime continuously and consistently, and added that the Serbian parliament had adopted in 2010 a declaration condemning the crime.

"Passing such a draft resolution would lead to destabilisation of the region and mistrust in the UN, and deepen the divide between peoples and create fresh tensions in the Western Balkans," he noted.

He thanked the African UN member states for their traditional friendship and respect of the territorial integrity of Serbia, noting that Serbia, as a successor of Yugoslavia, a co-founder of the Non-Aligned Movement, was proud of that legacy as well as of strengthening its ties with freedom-loving states on the African continent, which, "like Serbia, see the UN as a guarantor of peace and legal order worldwide."

During the day, Vucic will also hold consultations with representatives of Latin American and Caribbean states and meet with UN Under Secretary General and Special Adviser on Genocide Prevention Alice Wairimu Nderitu.

Previously, at a reception hosted by the Serbian Mission to the UN, Vucic said Serbia wanted the draft resolution to be withdrawn as it was not conducive to reconciliation but destabilisation in the region.
