BELGRADE - Serbian FM Marko Djuric condemned in the strongest terms a physical attack on Serbian Ambassador to Spain Irena Sarac, which took place in Madrid on Sunday afternoon.
"I condemn in the strongest terms the physical attack on Ambassador Sarac in central Madrid. From all relevant authorities, we demand full investigation and accountability for this unheard-of incident and act of violence against a top diplomatic representative of our country," Djuric said in a statement to Tanjug.
A Tanjug source said Sarac had been attacked by a young man late in the afternoon in a downtown Madrid street in which she resides.
According to eyewitnesses accounts, judging by his speech, the attacker is suspected to be of ethnic Albanian origin.
The witnesses said the man had approached Sarac while she was speaking on the phone in Serbian and asked her if she was from Serbia, then kicked her in the back and ran off.
Several eyewitnesses unsuccessfully tried to catch the attacker.
The attack was reported to the police, which arrived on the scene and investigated the incident.
The ambassador is in good condition, the source also said.
