BELGRADE- Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Monday evening a broader political movement might run in the next elections instead of his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
In an appearance on a Happy TV talk show, Vucic said that, despite persistent talk that he would never quit power, he would remain in his post for only as long as his term allowed him.
He dismissed speculations the relevant legislation would be changed to enable a parliamentary majority to elect the president.
"I have no intent or ambition to be elected by the parliament, although I have heard that countless times," Vucic said, adding that he would remain an SNS member and help the party even after his departure from its helm.
When asked about his potential successor as SNS leader, Vucic said there were many diligent and hard-working people in the party.
"I think it is by far the best party in Serbia... Can it be better? It can and it must. That is why I think creating a movement is very important because we must get some new people, people who did not want to join parties but want to take part in creating a modern Serbia," Vucic said.
"I believe that, around St Vitus's Day (June 28), we can hold the greatest political gathering of hope and political support to our country," he also said.
