ORASAC - An objective was set 220 years ago - nothing less than freedom for our people, Serbian FM Ivica Dacic said at the main Statehood Day ceremony in Orasac, central Serbia, on Thursday.

"Exactly 220 years ago, the most highly respected Serbs gathered here and made one of the most important decisions in our history. They decided to fight for freedom, the dream of generations before them for centuries. They had before them the highest objective anyone and any nation can set for themselves - nothing but freedom and nothing less than freedom for their people," Dacic said.

He said that was the objective the Serbs had set in 1804 - the year of the First Serbian Uprising against Turkish occupation - but that, through their sacrifice and courage, they had also left the same idea and obligation as a legacy.

The ceremony was led by Serbian Deputy PM and Defence Minister Milos Vucevic as an envoy of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
