BELGRADE - The announced public sector wage increase will take effect from November 1 and, as a result, the higher wages will be paid out in early December, Serbian Finance Minister Sinisa Mali said Tuesday.

The average monthly wage will reach 500 euros as early as December, he said on Pink TV.

He said wages would be raised by an average 9.6 pct after last year's 8.6 pct increase.

"After eight months, we have a budget surplus and the wage increases are a result of a positive budget review," he said.

He confirmed discussions with the IMF would be continued on October 3 but added that decisions on wage increases were always up to the Serbian government.

Economic growth is always the most important thing for the government, he noted.
