PARIS- France has a great interest in investing in Serbia to ensure it does not lose the race against China, says Alexis Trud, a French geopolitical expert specialising in the Balkans.

"Serbia has high hopes about EU accession, which gets delayed every time. At this moment, the date is set for no sooner than 2028. The country is in tough talks, step by step, on technical chapters but, at the end of the talks, no Serbian official will be able to accept a loss of the southern province of Kosovo, which is envisioned by the talks," Trud told France Info.

The EU governs itself by an "obsolete 1990s analysis" about protecting the rights of the "Albanian minority in Kosovo," he said.

"What the EU is failing to see is that, due to the delayed timeframes, Russia, China and Turkey have made comebacks and that they are very present in Belgrade. If the EU, and particularly France, one of its largest representatives, does not shift to a higher gear, Serbia could become overwhelmed by the East," Trud said.
