BELGRADE - Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Sunday a Serbian gendarme who killed a terrorist during Saturday's attack on the Israeli embassy in Belgrade would be decorated and noted that the people of Serbia had no reason for fear.

Acting in self-defence, Milos Jevremovic, 34, gunned down 25-year-old Milos Zujovic, an Islamic convert from Mladenovac near Belgrade who had moved to Novi Pazar, southwestern Serbia.

A crossbow arrow fired by Zujovic struck Jevremovic in the neck.

Jevremovic is in hospital and making a good recovery.

In an appearance on Prva TV, Vucic congratulated Jevremovic on the "job well done" and said the gendarme would make a full return to duty in a few months' time.

"According to all statistics, Serbia is one of the safest countries in the world and one of the safest in Europe... Belgrade and Serbia have the best safety rankings and I am proud of that fact," he said.

He added that Serbia would have no mercy for terrorism or terrorists and that its people can feel calm and safe.

"The state of Serbia is strong enough to deal with any form of terrorism," Vucic said.

Serbian authorities have declared a red terrorism alert in the wake of the attack.

To date, two people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
